College LifeI don't really talk too much about my daily life on dA since I didn't want to spam everyone with constant horror stories of my time in the kitchen (which is why I do that on fb https://www.facebook.com/FisheyePlacebo/photos_stream instead) but today, I would like to share some of the extra "special" moments during my college life (even though I graduated already).
When upstairs neighbors are being very loud, the most effective method is to leave an angry coconut at their door
When life gives you pears, cut them into ducks and bake them into pizza~
When the Occupy movement swept through campus, make sure the fridge participates.
When assigned to go to a museum for Art History, take detailed notes of the kinky nipple biting eagles.
When roommate cooks something that cannot be described with words...
When the new apartment sink rage quits...
When I got the bright idea to create an aquaponics system in my bedroom... which later flooded the carpet... (Trust me, I'm an
1000 Words, Sincerest ApologiesFor those who pre-ordered copies of 1000 Words, I'm deeply sorry that your order has not arrived yet. It has been an extremely stressful week for me to finally receive the shipment from the printers at Active Media Publishing http://www.activemediapublishing.com/ after such a long delay which cost us to miss Fanime, only to find out that the books were far below the expected quality.
Not only did the colors come out neon yellow and even green in some parts, there were large ink smudges on 50% of the books, while another 50% had uneven spines.
This is how the books came out. Neon yellow.
Note: colors may vary depending on your monitor screen so it may not look too bad on certain computers, but it looks bad in real life.
And then there are smudges that you can find on the right side of every other book. The scanner actually made the smudges less obvious, but again, it looks very bad in real life.
Finally, half of the books had varying degrees of uneven printing on the spines that is symm
Respect YourselfMy friend shared this video to warn other artists about how she was taken advantage of, and I believe this is a very important message that every artist should hear.
I've lost count of how many times someone, be it a big corporation or an individual, have asked me to illustrate for them for free. It will always go something like this "You draw this for us, and we will include your name in the credits. That's good publicity for you!" as if such a pathetic offer holds any merit.
There was one specific case where a guy wanted to use my drawing as a book cover but didn't want to pay. He said he might print up to 50,000 books, so that's like an amazing offer of 50,000 views for me right? Wrong. 50,000 is nothing. We live in the information revolution. Don't forget we have places like Deviantart, tumblr, and all those social networking sites. Sharing art, like sharing any information, has never been easier. You don't have to degrade yourself for some disrespectful publisher to get you art se
Fisheye Placebo ImagesI saw this awesome Fisheye Placebo music video by Linda Neumann and realized that it would probably be easier for music video editors and language translators to have a textless version of all of the panels so here it is https://www.dropbox.com/sh/84jcondrsylfh82/pVEbp8d1Qq
Feel free to download the images for any class projects, music videos, translations, etc. Please credit and remember that I drew these for everyone to read for free, so do not try to sell or profit from my work in anyway. If I find people charging others for translated versions of this story, or selling copies of my work, I will be very angry ):
That aside, check out the cool video! She did a wonderful job editing everything
The Roommate Adventures of ~THE SUNKEN SINK~While I was too busy stressing over the issues with the 1000 Words book and trying to fix the problems, I failed to mention some other, sillier, problems we've had since moving to a new apartment.
It went something like this:
Roommate: Wenqing!!! The sink fell!!!
Me: ...What?! (in my mind: Silly roommy got her English all confused. She must have meant something fell into the sink)
After going to the bathroom
Me: Holy crap! The sink fell!!!
The sinking sink, the sunken sink, the sink sank? Thinking of sinking sinks lol
And then the other roommate came home and was (in her own words) " ┻━┻ ︵ヽ(`Д´)ﾉ︵ ┻━┻ "
But as the first roommate put it: "The good thing about not having a bathroom sink is that you can just reach through the counter where the sink should be to grab whatever is underneath."

Comics Class at UC Berkeley
Hey! For those of you who are students at UC Berkeley this year, it's time to sign up for classes again!
My excellent roommate and friends will be teaching a comics class this semester I will not be teaching it myself (though I might visit from time to time to pester them lol). If you like storytelling and want to create comics with others, this is a place to start! People will work to create 3 comic projects through out the semester, both group and individual comics. These comics will be published online as they are finished.
My roommate helped teach this course spring last year, and it was a great way to get in the practice of drawing in a group, as well as for a deadline. It's also a great way to meet a lot of other people who love comics through the course. (I met my roommate through teaching a digital painting class 2 years ago XD ).

This is Madness! (and Sparta)Hello Eveyone!
Life has been pretty crazy lately. I just moved to a new apartment and we won't get our internet until a week later so I just want announce a few things while I still have the chance (using my friend's wifi atm).
1. Fanime was amazing! Thank you all who dropped by my table, and sorry that I lost my voice on the 4th day too much talking lol... It was great making new friends, hanging out with old friends, and just seeing other deviants in real life! I'm sorry a lot of the prints sold out on the first day, but I will try to open online sales for certain prints once I get my internet back. And I will definitely print more for future conventions
My deepest apologies for not having 1000 Words for Fanime. The printers at Active Media Publishing http://www.activemediapublishing.com/ promised over and over that they would have it ready, but they didn't, and when we called them about it, they hung up on us. As a matter of fact, we still don't have the book

Spreading Semi-Realism appreciation!
'Cloud rhapsody' by anndr
Since I believe the efforts of semi-realism artists are not sufficiently appreciated, because there are so many fantastic illustrations in this style that does not have the right visibility on here, I decided to create an article to advertise these artists that are, for me, the 'new faces' of this fashionable and yet so difficult art style.
First of all, Semi-realism is a drawing style derived from mangas but more complex in terms of style. Indeed, if we want to be more precise, it is the missing link between mangas and digital art. No giant eyes but neither skin blemishes.
I would really appreciate if dA could add a category for this particular art style but I can easily admit the boundaries to define this style are very labile.
Well, after this brief introduction, I'm featuring some samples of this style from real
Self Censorship and Feeling Judged.Im sharing this around because its something I feel extremely strong about. I wont sit idly by and let good artists be strongarmed into feeling jugded, second guessing and self censoring (removing from portfolio) their own work.
If you feel that way, my message to you is this:
I received some really troubling PM's today. Please don't feel you need to self-censor your work if you enjoy making pinups / sexy girls. Don't remove it from your folios, and never, ever, second guess what you enjoy spending your free time making. Especially don't feel judged because you appear to not be a champion of a cause of any kind. Regardless of how prominant of an artist you are, or where you work in our industry, your free time, is YOURS. Feel free to express who you are, NOT who other people think you should be.
Your eternal friend,
PE: 5 reasons to believe in yourselfSuccess is not a measure of how much money you earn or how popular you are, rather, it is being able to find your passion - one that makes you happy and ultimately, one that you would be happy to leave as your legacy. To make a step forward to reach your dream takes smarts and guts but why couldn't you? Here is five reasons why you can.
1. Everyone was born equal
More-less, this is true, some people are born more challenged than others but we all possess skills and ability to learn. It is possible to build something out of nothing if we really want to. It all comes down to our preferences and decisions.
"Nobody can make you feel inferior without your consent."
2. Overcoming your fears
By constantly challenging yourself, you can get rid of fears that used to follow you. You will no longer be worried, you'll know you can count on yourself.
"If you think you can, you can. If you think you can't, you're right."
Famous Photographers: What we can learnThere are things that we can learn from everybody, whether it's as they say - sitting at the feet of an elderly person - or indeed reading from a book, looking at history in photos and so on. But what, if anything, can we learn from the Famous Photographers of the past? Well, plenty.
Julie Margaret Cameron
She was a shrewd business woman, and her fame came from having the only photographs of some very famous iconic people in History. And how did she manage this? By meticulously keeping details and registering her copyright with every single Photograph she took. We can learn a lot from her actions, particularly in an age where anything can be replicated, if you have the right tools. Equally, we can also learn the value of the equipment we have around us, and how easy it is now to capture a photograph and share it with the world. Julie's time in Sri Lanka served as a testimony that without pure water and chemicals, she couldn't continue with her craft and a
Spirit Day 2012"Ultimately, I want Spirit Day to make just one person feel little bit better about his or herself, to feel safe enough in their own skin and to be proud of who they are" - Brittany McMillan
In memory of the young LGBT people who lost their lives to suicide, Brittany encouraged her friends to wear purple on a day in October -- a day that came to be known as Spirit Day. Since then, GLAAD has helped turn Spirit Day into a global event that inspires millions of individuals, celebrities, TV personalities, media outlets, companies and schools to wear purple in a stand against bullying.
While Spirit Day does focus on the LGBT community, I believe that it's anti-bullying message is relevant to every community. It only get's better, if we take the pledge to make it so.
Practice compassion and understanding, and treat others how you would like to be treated and we can make a difference.

Untitled is just a synonym for lazy.Well, the color poem form I introduced to dA was a rousing success, but interest of late seems to have died down. Found Poetry Project - Titles as Art
One of my favorite things about the creative process is coming up with a good title. The title can make or break a piece; it can give context not provided in the piece itself, set a tone or mood, or just give that little extra something you can't put a name on.
You know I'm right. How many times have you stumbled into an ordinary piece with a beautifully creative title? And it's not something

Studio GhibliA Tokyo based animation studio that needs no introduction! Studio Ghibli is best known for their traditionally animated anime films. It was originally founded by the legendary pair, Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, back in 1985. Ghibli is named after an Italian war plane that was used for scouting, this reflected Miyazaki's love for not only airplanes but also Italy. The name itself means "hot wind blowing through the Sahara Desert".
Takahata and Miyazaki
It was formed after the great success of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, which both Takahata and Miyazaki worked on. Their first feature film hit was Laputa, or some of you may know it as Castle in the Sky. Most of the films that Studio Ghibli produces is by Miyazaki, followed by Takahata, although they have worked with other film producers and directors as well.

About sxc.hu stockGreetings!
A few of you have been really worried lately about using stock from sxc.hu here because of the change in their ownership. Basically, you were concerned that their license says that you cannot redistribute their stock in whole or in part, by itself or combined with other elements, without the written approval of the original photographer.
As we all know by now, creating a photomanipulation is considered "making a derivative image." And we know we can't make premade backgrounds without permission from the photographers, as doing so is redistributing their work.
I advised a couple of you to check with the Help Desk and sxc.hu to find out the whole truth before making rash decisions about your group that could potentially make everyone panic.
Using my own personal account, I wrote to sxc.hu to find out what the story was. Here's what I said:
I was just wondering whether creating phot

Tapastic PPP for Comic Artists!Hey guys! It was great meeting everyone in San Francisco last weekend!
In other news, there's a great new program for comic artists that I would like to share. It's part of Tapastic's Primetime Publishing Program (PPP) that pays comic artists based on the amount of page views they generate. If you are a comic artist, then you can make some extra money doing what you love. If you're not a comic artist, you can still check out all the cool webcomics on Tapastic.com and help support the artists that way
