I had the honor of participating in zemotion’s Motherland Chronicles project :D

I decided to reinterpret one of her older piece Opulence. by zemotion with her newer ones Motherland Chronicles 7 - Self Portrait in Water by zemotion . It was such an amazing process. I don’t normally work with photo references so this has been a great learning experience.

Be on the look out for the book that’s coming out! Get the updates at her facebook! :)

There is a chiaroscuro effect created by the dark negative shapes against the light values of the positive shape. As the viewer, I start my journey tangled in her hair and follow the strands down to the figure. I stop at the bouquet and notice that you have incorporated skeletal rib-like shapes. I follow the rib cage onto the back bone which carries me to the bottom of the work. The text of an excellent composition is that the viewer then can return and not fall off the edge. You have used the highlights on the body to admirably send my eye back up to enjoy the entire picture once again. I luxuriate in the textures of the flowers and hair and can almost feel the smoothness of skin. Simply breathtaking!

This is amazing. I absolutely love it.

It is beautiful but it's haunting. Maybe this is just how I'm interpreting it, but it looks like it's a comment on the institution of marriage. Really pretty on the surface, but if you look at her face, it's possible that she doesn't want to be there, and might be being forced into it. Even the title (Remember that you must die) could be a in reference to "'Till death do us part".

Really interesting piece! I'd love to hear this girl's back story...
